People have different opinions about the best way to burn fat. If you read enough "expert" suggestions, you are likely to become confused and probably frustrated. If you look at all of the dietary supplements on the market, you’ll become even more confused. Here are a few facts that should help clear up the confusion.

The cells of the body need energy to perform the functions required of them. The calories in the food that we eat provide that energy. The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume, creating a "calorie-deficit".

When there is a calorie deficit, your body will convert some of its fat stores to energy, but in order for this process to be efficient, several things must happen. Blood glucose levels must be stable. The liver must be healthy. The cells must be sensitive to insulin, so that they can accept glucose from the bloodstream as energy. Eating might be the best way to burn fat, in that eating small meals every couple of hours keeps blood sugar levels stable, so that stored fat can be converted to energy. The digestive process burns calories.

During digestion blood sugar and insulin levels rise, assuming carbohydrates are consumed. The liver stores glycogen and necessary nutrients. When you think about all of the processes that go on in your body at all times, it’s mind-boggling.

So, first you need to eat. You need to be sure that you are getting enough protein and good sources of carbohydrates, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. If your carbohydrate intake is too high, you can have unhealthy blood sugar levels. The same is true if you don’t get enough carbohydrates. That’s why a "balanced diet" is always recommended.

Exercise that builds muscle may be the best way to burn fat, because when you have more muscle fibers on your body, it burns more calories all of the time. Even when you are sitting in front of the computer, as you are now.

Aerobics or cardiovascular training is often suggested as the best way to burn fat, but short-duration high intensity workouts burn glucose. Fat stores provide the energy for low to moderate intensity exercises of longer duration. Some fat is burned during high intensity workouts, but carbohydrates, converted to glucose, are the primary fuel.

Dietary supplements that are promoted as fat-burners contain a variety of different compounds. If you need to lose weight, the supplement that you should be taking on a daily basis is one that contains a variety of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and herbal extracts. It’s simply the best value for your money.

You should avoid supplements that contain caffeine, Ephedra, willow bark, aspirin and ma huang. Those that contain green tea, ginseng and dietary nutrients are okay. Just don’t rely to heavily on them and be sure to buy from a reputable manufacturer. The bottom line is that the best way to burn fat does not come in a bottle. It takes a little work.
